The book wait till helen comes6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() It captured me with its sense of growing dread and it surprised me with its frank discussions of death and suicide. I found Wait Till Helen Comes to be a spooky read that not only engaged me with its plot and characters, but its simple yet evocative descriptions of the world the characters inhabit. This is strange considering I was aware of the book, but for whatever reason I never got around to it– that is, until now. Unlike many children, especially those who sought out ghost stories growing up, I had not read the book as a child. When I read Wait Till Helen Comes for this article, it was my first time. ![]() ![]() And just when they thought she couldn’t get any worse, she meets Helen– a ghost that shares many things with Heather, including her initials and the desire to have a friend who will love them unconditionally. Heather, it seems, is bound and determined to make their lives (and the life of their mom) miserable. They’ve tried to be nice to her, but to no avail. Heather hates Molly and Michael and they’re not sure why. Molly’s little brother Michael is an aspiring scientist/naturalist, and Molly’s little stepsister Heather is an aspiring trouble maker. Wait Till Helen Comes is told from the point of view of Molly. ![]()

The winds of winter amazon6/29/2023 ![]() So Martin is generally a slow writer, if you couldn’t already tell. Martin isn’t speeding up on The Winds of Winter “It’s great when it’s done, and when it’s not done, you struggle with ever you can really do it.” George R.R. “There are writers who love the simple act of writing, and there are other writers…who love having written,” he said. There are writers who write multiple pages a day no matter what. And I do that for several days and I go to my wife and I say, ‘Where’s my talent? What did you do with my talent? Did you put it somewhere else? I can’t find it anymore.’ Then I have a good day. ![]() Why am I pretending I can do this? This is terrible.’ And I wind up rewriting the whole thing. There are also days where it’s hard.”Īnd I sit down and I read what I wrote yesterday and I say, ‘This is shit. Martin outlined some of his difficulties a few months back while speaking with filmmaker Kevin Smith. “There are joyful days, when it really comes alive, and the characters come alive and the scene and the words are pouring out of you. ![]()

The sheltering sky analysis6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() An excellent album that can easily be recommended for more than just soundtrack aficionados. The local source music, too, adds to this, giving the album a grounding in the real world that completes the overall structure. ![]() Where Sakamoto easily sketches panorama with his music, Horowitz sketches in mystery. It is unclear whether this is intentional or accidental, but i believe personally that it was suicide. In its interior aspect, The Sheltering Sky is an allegory of the spiritual adventure of the fully conscious person into modern experience. Horowitz' part in this is in stepping away from traditional Western scoring and using Middle Eastern elements for score structures - something that's very effective indeed on "Fever Ride" with its blend of Moroccan and Spanish elements. The cook ends up blowing himself up in the trailer. The diversity thus makes for a more interesting album than might have been had from variations on the main minor-key "Sheltering Sky" theme (presented here in orchestrated and piano-based versions.) It also breaks away from the sound of Sakamoto's recordings, strong material that suffers from a certain digital harshness in the strings. The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles is a story of innocents abroad in an unfamiliar land. Part of the reason for the variation is that only twelve of the album's 21 tracks are by Sakamoto - several are source music, others were composed by Richard Horowitz. ![]() ![]() A varied soundtrack album that manages to weave in a little variation from the traditional type of motion picture scoring indulged in here by Sakamoto. ![]()

A Study in Brimstone by G.S. Denning6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Frankly, he couldn’t deduce his way out of a paper bag. A good man, perhaps a font of arcane power, certainly. Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius who uses the gift of deduction and reason to solve the most vexing of crimes. Check out my full review below and keep an eye out for my review to the sequel The Hell-Hound Of The Baskervilles which will be up tomorrow. ![]() ![]() A Study In Brimstone is a dark, hilarious, gory and intriguing fantasy parody which had me in tears (with laughter). Dennings has taken a classic series and given a complete makeover and I enjoyed the result. This series is so much fun, the concepts are well thought out and the humour is both quality and abundant. I was seriously excited about reading A Study In Brimstone and The Hell-Hound Of The Baskervilles, so much so that I started reading them as soon as they arrived, and I was not disappointed. Summed up in a word: phantasmagorical First Impressions Sent to me by Titan Books in exchange for an honest review. ![]()

A handful of dust book6/27/2023 ![]() Brenda and Beaver are, of course, drifting apart. This is where the novel becomes interesting. Realizing that her settlement may make him have to sell Hetton Abbey, he sets off on an expedition to South America. When Tony and Brenda’s son is killed, Brenda seeks a divorce from Tony. She starts an affair with Beaver and soon spends most of her time with him. Tony Last loves the seclusion but Brenda Last misses London society and Beaver is her link to that society. He goes to visit the Last family at Hetton Abbey. The novel starts with John Beaver, a dull society man and son of a fairly horrible interior designer. It is based on Waugh’s own personal experience when he travelled to Brazil in 1932 after the failure of his first marriage. ![]() He may have written better and greater novels than this one but this is my favourite Waugh novel, if only because of its wicked humour.
