The forbidden by clive barker6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() This should be noteworthy for both fans and collectors, as most of the author’s initial, shorter works apparently made their inaugural appearances in those volumes, rather than other anthologies, fanzines, etc. This means that a Barker story had been published in advance of its appearance in his Books of Blood anthology series, as “The Forbidden” wouldn’t arrive until later that year with Volume V. It’s on that track that a surprising revelation was made.Īs Jones tells it, Barker’s short story “The Forbidden” (the basis for Candyman) first saw the light of day back in 1985 in his horror fiction semiprozine Fantasy Tales. One of four bonus tracks on the disc, the duo’s talk is a lively discussion boasting interesting perspectives on the film, Candyman creator Clive Barker’s work, and much more. ![]() Of all the sweets to be found on Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of Bernard Rose’s Candyman, one of the most interesting features is the audio commentary by authors Stephen Jones and Kim Newman. ![]()

Severance ling ma review6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() When Shen Fever rages through China, then the rest of the world, “The End” occurs. All the while, she wonders what she could accomplish outside of the corporate walls. Candace lives the twenty-something life of a New Yorker, dates, has dinner parties, and pursues her photography in her spare time. The first is our normal life, in which protagonist Candace Chen works a menial corporate job coordinating reprints of the Bible with South Asian printers. They’re only months apart, but the world of each period is unrecognizable, compared to its counterpart. Severance juxtaposes its story with two timelines. Severance lampoons rampant capitalism, offers insight into the experience of a Chinese immigrant living in the States, and provides a hauntingly prescient look at how a virus could completely overturn life as we know it. ![]() But I read Severance anyway, thanks in large part to Ling Ma’s excellent storytelling and sharp, witty voice. I first picked up Ling Ma’s Severance thinking the novel inspired Apple TV’s show of the same name. ![]()

Roanoke Ridge by J.J. Dupuis6/25/2023 ![]() 'Linskey delivers a flawless feel for time and place, snappy down to earth dialect dialogue mixed in with unrelenting violence and pace' - Times 'One of the single most dramatic events of the Second World War, Linskey makes the mission of Jan Kubis and Joseph Gabcik impossible to put down' - Northern Echo Ungentlemanly Warfare is a captivating historical thriller about a pivotal and dramatic event from the Second World War. PLUTO by Takashi Nagasaki6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So with all that in mind you can understand my surprise when it was announced that Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki’s Pluto was going to get a fairly lavish, high-budget stage version courtesy of the Barbican, which played across three dates in the London theatre (originally built for the Royal Shakespeare Company) this past week.įor those unfamiliar, the manga is a modern-day retelling of an old Astro Boy story, a murder-mystery wherein an android detective investigates the killings of some of the most powerful robots in existence, suspecting he and the Mighty Atom (as Astro is called in his native Japan) might be next on the hit list. They just tend to fly a little more beneath the radar, as was the case when the smaller Southwark Playhouse’s brought the feudal furry Japan Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo to life in 2014, thanks to some top-notch costuming and make-up work. Which isn’t to say page-to-stage adaptations are completely unheard of. There are the odd examples of blockbuster stage translations of comics - a musical version of Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical Fun Home transfers to London’s Young Vic this summer after a Tony award-winning run off-Broadway, and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was a stuntman-crippling shambles yet it set records for week one ticket sales - but otherwise you don’t see Marvel, Image or DC dominating TKTS booths the same way that they do the multiplexes and bookshelves. Everyone appears to have accepted cinematic adaptations of comic books as totally natural, but the theatre is another matter. ![]()
